Surge-protective diodes, commonly known as transil diodes, transient-voltage-surges suppressors (TVS), lightning arresters, or surge diverters, are high-protection components developed in the early seventies. They are designed to protect personal computers, power lines, and industrial systems from the damage caused by high voltages or over-voltage events, such as lightning or power line disturbances, and to provide a safe path for the current flow. The transil diode is designed with a breakdown voltage that is higher than the maximum operating voltage of the protected system, enabling it to clamp the voltage at or below the operating voltage level.

Among surge-protection devices, SMAJ33 is one of the most popular. It has an incredible clamping capability over large ranges of pulse widths and breakdown voltages and is often used in consumer electronics, automotive applications, industrial control systems, telecommunications networks, and more.
