Working Principle

The SMCG6.0CA-M3/57T is a solid state device consisting of a Surge Junction (SJ) Diode, Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS), and an Anti-Parallel [ABI], which are combined in the same package. It acts as a voltage clamp, so that any incoming voltage which is greater than the breakdown voltage of the device is clamped to the breakdown voltage. The device also acts as a short circuit which redirects any current that exceeds the breakdown voltage back to its source. It works in both directions; reducing incoming voltage and redirecting current.

The device combines the ruggedness of a Junction Diode and the low clamping voltage of a TVS. It also uses a special topology which helps to reduce electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection flaws. This topology helps to protect very sensitive components from unwanted transients without also damaging the components in the process.
