Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) based on their application are further divided in to TVS Diodes, Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). SMDA05C – 8/TR13 is one such member of the TVS Diode family. These are designed to protect sensitive equipment from high voltage transients generated due to inductive switching from relay coils, electromechanical switches or high energy pulses from capacitive circuit failures. Types

SMDA05C-8/TR13 is a bidirectional diode available mainly in two package types – the SMA (Small Outline Package) and SMB (Surface-Mounted Device). These dual-packages are designed to operate over a temperature range of -55˚C to 150˚C. The SMA is hermetically sealed to ensure its operation even in highly corrosive environments. The SMB is designed for high-efficiency operation and requires minimum board space.

Working Principle

TVS diodes work on a simple concept of clamping the voltages above the reverse breakdown voltage to a defined value. This breakdown voltage is the maximum voltage that the diode can withstand in reverse biased mode. SMDA05C – 8/TR13 is designed to protect the electronic systems in both directions of forward and reverse polarities by clamping the voltage levels to a defined level. These diodes contain junction structure which suppresses the surge and blocks the voltage spike generating from various factors. In simple terms, the devices search for the optimized reverse breakdown voltage which is of a lower value that the actual surge voltage. The surge voltage is then forced to a predetermined limiting value.
