TPS2053BD Working Principle

The TPS2053BD family of PDS consists of two major components: a power stage which controls load current in response to the Gate voltage, and a gate driver which amplifies the Gate signals to switch on/off the power stage. The working principle of the TPS2053BD is depicted in Figure 1.

In order to switch on the power stage of the TPS2053BD, the Gate phase of the IC should be driven high (+Vgate). This causes a voltage drop across the power stage and allows current to flow through the load connected to the PDS.

In order to switch off the power stage of the TPS2053BD, the Gate phase of the IC should be driven low (0V). This causes a voltage discontinuity in the power stage, which removes the current flowing through the load.

The TPS2053BD also features a variety of protection features, such as over-temperature, over-voltage, and reverse-voltage protection and current limit protection which keeps the power stage from undergoing excessive stress. Additionally, the TPS2053BD is designed to operate with a maximum operating temperature of up to 150 C, helping improve the overall system thermal management and reduce the time needed for thermal testing.
