TPS565208DDCR is a selective, low on-time, synchronous step-down regulator specifically designed for mobile and wearable applications. It includes an internal N-channel MOSFET, an integrated loop Compensation, an inductor current sensor and a wide input supply range. TPS565208DDCR is capable of output voltage adjustable between 0.5 V and 5.50 V operating from an input supply between 2.7V and 5.50 V. It is capable of sourcing up to 3A of output current and supports programmable soft start up, frequency foldback and thermal shutdown features.
TPS565208DDCR operates in pulse width modulation mode regulated by an external current sense resistor selected by the user. At the same time, the voltage feed-back circuit can regulate the output voltage of the system, and it can monitor the voltage drop on the current sense resistor, which can be used as a warning signal.
The application fields of TPS565208DDCR are adaptive and diverse, with the main application fields such as mobile and wearable devices, portable audio and video players, medical monitoring systems and medical equipment, automotive electronics.
Working Principle
The TPS565208DDCR uses the BUCK converter scheme for voltage conversion. The circuit consists of an internal N-Channel MOSFET, an integrated loop compensation device, an inductor current sensor, and a wide input supply range from 2.7 to 5.50V. It can regulate the output voltage from 0.5V to 5.50V.
The TPS565208DDCR operates in pulse width modulation(PWM) mode. The ON-Time of each cycle is determined by the error amplifier in the regulator responding to the difference between the output voltage and the reference voltage. The reference voltage is an internal voltage given by the voltage divider made up of two external resistors (R1 and R2) connected between the output voltage pin and GND. This error amplifier increases or decreases the ON-Time of the PWM signal to keep the output voltage at the desired value.
The inductor current sensing circuit allows for careful current adjustment for a specified duty cycle. The inductor current that is sensed is compared with the duty cycle signal by an integrating comparator with hysteresis. When the duty cycle signal is greater than the sensed inductor current, the regulator increases the duty cycle signal, which in turn increases the inductor current. The inductor current sensing output signal is also used by the thermal foldback circuit as a warning signal for current excessive (or short circuit).
The integrated loop compensation feature of the TPS565208DDCR provides a stable and constant output voltage over load, line and temperature changes. The user must select the external components of the circuit to further optimize the system performance. The proper selection of the compensation components and the inductor integration can ensure system stability, ensure the transient response and avoid the circuit instability caused by overshoot or oscillation.
TPS565208DDCR also provides adjustable soft start and frequency foldback features which can be used to reduce inrush current during system start-up and reduce power consumption during maximum load conditions. The TPS565208DDCR also provides a thermal shutdown feature which helps to protect the system from damage due to excessive heat.
