TPS61014DGS is a DC-DC converter team (step-down converter). It has been designed to deliver multiple output voltages as low as 0.6V of both logic and analog circuits with a minimal power dissipation over a wide frequency range. It uses a single inductor, small footprint and low component count, thus having both high efficiency and fast transient response. The device uses a regulated topology, enabling a wide input voltage range, low ripple values and fast transient response. It can operate in several different modes, depending on the application needs, such as PFM, Pulse-Skip and Forced continuous (FC).The most common application for the TPS61014DGS is for low power, low noise requirements, where a single output converter is needed to convert an unregulated input voltage to one or multiple regulated output voltages, such as tablets, PDAs, pagers, and digital cameras.The TPS61014DGS can be divided into three main functional blocks; the control block, the regulated power block, and the output voltage block. The first block consists of an integrated oscillator and a currentmode control circuit. This block is used to provide an internally regulated frequency, which can vary from 100 kHz to 1.6 MHz, as well as an externally adjustable frequency.The regulated power block consists of two switches, an output inductor, an input capacitor, and an output capacitor. The switches are used to control the current flow into the output inductor to obtain the desired output voltage. The input capacitor is used to filter the input voltage, while the output capacitor provides a low impedance path for the output current.The third block is the output voltage block, which consists of an internal comparator and an output voltage divider. The divider is used to create feedback to the comparator circuit, which is used to keep the output voltage in regulation.In addition to its main application field, the TPS61014DGS can also be used for various applications. It can be used for power supplies for portable devices, as well as for applications that require a wide range of output voltages. It can also be used for automotive and medical applications, where fast current-mode operation and minimal board area are desirable.The working principle of the TPS61014DGS is based on the application of the buck converter topology, using an internal oscillator to create a square wave that is used to control the two switches (which can be either NMOS or PMOS). The duty cycle of the wave is adjusted to the desired output voltage. When the wave is high, one of the switches is turned on and current start to flow into the inductor, storing energy. When the wave is low, the switch is turned off and the current continues to flow, this time through the diode and into the output capacitor, providing the output voltage. The duty cycle of the wave is adjusted based on the feedback from the output voltage divider, in order to keep the output voltage in regulation.
