Optical Sensors, such as Ambient Light, IR, and UV sensors, are used to detect and measure light intensity and to analyze reflected light in a variety of applications. One such sensor is the TSL25911FN. This sensor, built on a Texas Instruments Integrated Circuit, is a Light-to-Digital converter. It conveniently works with all light, regardless of color or intensity, and can be used to sense ambient light intensity.
The TSL25911FN consists of two photodiodes. The first photodiode is a Reference Photodiode that is used to allow for changes in background light level. The second is the sensing photodiode, which senses the ambient light and adjusts the gain correspondingly. The signal from the sensing photodiode is converted by the integrated circuit from an analog voltage to a digital output with a 12-bit resolution. This digital data can then be used to determine the amount of light hitting the sensors as well as detect changes in light intensity.
The TSL25911FN can be used in various applications, such as light integration by time, measuring total amount of light by day or night, and determining the level of ambient light for optical switches in phones, equipment, or other applications. In order to use the TSL25911FN, an external voltage source must be supplied. This can be done using a 3V DC supply connected to the VCC and GND pin. In order to change the integration time, a capacitor must also be connected between the DI/INT and GND pin. Once the TSL25911FN has been properly powered and integrated, an external microprocessor can be used to receive the data output and interpret the results.
