A TVS, or Transient Voltage Suppressor, is a semiconductor device designed to protect circuits against transient voltage surges. The most common type used is the TVS diode. TVS diodes are a type of voltage-dependent bi-directional surge protecting device (SPD). They are designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from harmful high-energy transients. The TVS305SM is a 5-pin surface-mount TVS diode specifically designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from damaging transients. This diode is designed to meet the requirements of +4kV i-line surges and +6kV l-line surges in accordance with IEC 61000-4-5.Application Fields
TVS305SM is used primarily to protect against electrical overstress (EOS) and electrostatic discharge (ESD). It can also be used to protect AC and DC power lines, RF signals, control signals, ports, peripheral cables, and high-speed data lines. It can be used in applications such as portable handheld devices, power supplies, consumer electronics, HVAC, automotive, telecommunications, and medical equipment.Working Principle
TVS305SM works by clamping the voltage down to a safe level when it reaches a certain threshold. It monitors the voltage and conducts current when it exceeds the breakdown voltage of the diode, clamping the voltage down to the breakdown voltage of the diode. This limits the energy delivered to the circuit and prevents the energy from damaging or destroying the electronic components in the circuit.When the device is exposed to a voltage surge, its avalanche breakdown voltage is triggered, causing it to switch from a low resistance state to a high resistance state and allowing current to flow through it. By limiting the current flow and dissipating the energy, the diode will protect sensitive electronic components from being damaged. The TVS305SM can dissipate up to 600 Watts of power and has a fast response time of 5 nanoseconds to protect against high-energy transients.The TVS305SM is available in a variety of packages, including a small, low-profile SMD package. This makes it ideal for space-constrained applications as well as applications with limited access to components.
