Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are capacitors with a solid electrolyte and with the anode formed from an aluminum foil with a flat surface, covered with a film of oxide which acts as a dielectric. First, the electrolyte and a cathode material are placed in a container around the anode material – usually aluminium foil. When a voltage is applied, the cathode material attracts positive ions from the electrolyte, thus forming a storage of positive ions around the anode. As the ions increase, so does the charge stored in the aluminium foil. Once the voltage reaches a certain point, the current stops and can no longer move the ions. This process is the same mechanism by which any capacitor functions, but the added electrolyte provides a larger capacitance to aluminum electrolytic capacitors.
