This electric field then causes charge carriers to flow and create a stored charge of Q, or “capacitance”, between the two plates of the capacitor.An electrolytic capacitor bypasses the need for a DC current to form an electric field, allowing for a greater amount of stored charge for a given size. This is due to the chemical properties of the electrolyte used inside the capacitor, which allows for a more efficient electric field to build across the plates of the capacitor. The electrolyte will typically use a liquid or gelled electrolyte, allowing for greater capacitance for a given size of capacitor.
