Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (also referred to as electrolytic capacitors, electrolytic condensers, or aluminum capacitors) are energy-storing components that have a wide range of applications in consumer, industrial and military electronics. These components are popular because of their low cost and combination of high capacity, low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and low self-inductance.

The UHW1V152MHD aluminum electrolytic capacitor (AEC) is a long-life, vertical mount aluminum electrolytic capacitor that is designed to address a variety of electronic system requirements. This device is mainly used in industrial, consumer and telecom applications. The UHW1V152MHD AEC offers long-life capability and high ripple current capability, with a long shelf life, low impedance, and a wide temperature range of -400C to +850C.

Working Principle

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor (AEC) works through the principle of electrolysis, which is a process that produces electrical energy from a chemical reaction. In the AEC, a metal anode (electrolyte) is placed in an electrolyte solution and a metal cathode (electrolyte) is connected to the positive plate of the capacitor. With the help of the electrolyte, an electric field is applied between the plates, resulting in an oxidation reaction that creates an electrolyte film on the anode.

This solution within the capacitor contains ions that can migrate between the plates. When an electric potential is applied across the capacitor, the ions move towards the anode and deposit an electrolyte film on the anode. This electrolyte film acts as a barrier between the two plates and forms an electrical extension across the capacitor. This extension is called a dielectric and its purpose is to store electrical energy.

Application Fields

The UHW1V152MHD AEC is widely used in consumer, industrial and telecom applications. It is particularly useful in switch mode AC/DC power supplies, data processing and telecommunications, uninterruptible power supplies and DC-DC converters.

AECs are also used in switching power supplies, audio-visual equipment, automotive electronics, radios, computers, and other consumer and industrial electronics. This device is also used in high-performance capacitor networks and signal-conditioning applications. In addition, AECs can be used as signal-conditioning resistors to reduce noise in high-speed data systems.
