Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are composed of an anode formed by a rolled sheet of aluminum foil, a separate resistor, and a steel case which serves as a cathode. These components are separated by a paper or plastic separator laced between them. The resistor is immersed in an electrolyte solution. When a DC voltage is applied between the anode and cathode, an anode oxide layer is formed between the anode and electrolyte which acts as the dielectric layer of the capacitor. The larger the applied voltage, the thicker the oxide layer will be.

In order to increase the capacitance, the aluminum electrolytic capacitor has to be polarized. This means applying a larger voltage than the working voltage to the cathode for a brief period of time in order to form a thicker oxide layer on the anode. This process is also known as "forming" the capacitor.
