Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of capacitor which uses an aluminum oxide layer as the dielectric layer instead of regular insulating material like waxed paper. They are often round in shape and are used in a wide variety of circuits. They have an impressive energy storage capacity and offer good frequency range and high temperature tolerance compared to other types of capacitors.

The USP1C220MDD1TE capacitor is a long life, radial type aluminum electrolytic capacitor, ideal for electronic circuit protection. The anode is formed from a strip of aluminium foil and a conductive medium such as a solution of glycine or electrolyte. The cathode is formed from a strip of manganese dioxide or a mixed oxide which is formed by reacting manganese dioxide with a solution of zinc chloride.

The capacitor dielectric is formed by a thin layer of insulating material such as aluminium oxide which is formed by reacting the cathode and anode with electrolytes. This layer serves to separate the two electrodes from each other and to prevent electrons from being able to pass directly between them, thus retaining the charge. As this is a non-polar capacitor, pulses of current will only pass in one direction hence the capacitor is suitable for use in AC circuits.

Once the electrolytic is insulated this capacitor can act as an energy storage device in a variety of circuits. When voltage is applied to the capacitor, the charge stored within the capacitor will tend to increase and when the voltage is removed from the capacitor, the charge stored within the capacitor will tend to decrease. This charging and discharging of the capacitor is the basis of its working principle.
