Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, also known as electrolytic capacitors, are widely used in electronic circuits. They are ideal for use in power supplies, signal processing circuits, and line filters.

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor consists of a solid aluminum electrolyte, typically aluminum oxide, and two foil electrodes. The anode, also known as the cathode, is made from an aluminum foil and the other electrode, called the cathode, is made from a tin-plated electrolyte. Each electrode is typically surrounded by a satisfactory electrolyte.

To function, the aluminum electrolytic capacitor requires a voltage on the anode, which attracts positive ions within the electrolyte. These positive ions then release their electrons in the vicinity of the anode, creating an electrical current. The current flows through the electrolyte to the cathode and the electrons are attracted to the anode, thus completing the circuit.

The most significant mechanical aspect of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is their size. The majority of units marketed today are small in size, allowing for a wide range of applications. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are generally not used for signal conditioning, audio, power conditioning and other where the high frequency signal demands large drive currents. However, the dielectric in aluminum electrolytic capacitors is ideal for large signal, DC power applications.

The aluminum electrolytic capacitor is subjected to electromechanical stresses and aluminum electrochemical dissolution during its operation. The rate of aluminum dissolution and corresponding leakage current are related to the capacitor\'s electrical parameters and environmental conditions, as well as the materials used in its construction.

In high-current usage, the aluminum electrolytic capacitor can be used to provide capacitance in a much smaller package size compared to disc ceramic capacitors. This makes it suitable for use in tight spaces or on printed circuit boards. Furthermore, aluminum electrolytic capacitors provide much higher capacitance values than other types of capacitors when used in equivalent formats.

Since they are a non-polarized design, they are also suitable for bridging AC signals, or when applied to AC loads in high-current applications.
