Diodes, also referred to as semi-conductors, play an important role in today’s electronic circuits, by regulating the flow of current. There is a broad variety of diodes, each playing a unique role in rectification, regulation, filtering and signal processing of current in an application. A rectifier array is a combination of several diodes connected together to achieve improved performance such as circuit isolation and minimized power dissipation. The VS-40CPQ050-N3 is one such example of a rectifier array.
The VS-40CPQ050-N3 is a single element, planar passivated four diode rectifier array with a built-in varistor element. It comprises of four discrete PNP silicon diodes with a Varistor element. The diodes offer good forward current rectification performance from a relatively low VF of 0.7V and Leakage current of 0.015uA. It is designed to protect against surges and spikes caused by lightning or electrostatic discharge, with a capacitance of 150pF, a varistor rating of 40V¯ and a derating rate of 0.1W/K. This rectifier array is capable of operating up to a temperature of 125°C and is supplied in a very small form factor dimensions of 4.4mm x 2.2mm x 1.2mm.
The primary application of the VS-40CPQ050-N3 is to protect sensitive electronic devices and components such as Cellular phones and other portable devices. It is also used in security systems, home automation, automotive electronics, monitoring devices and medical systems.
The working principle of the VS-40CPQ050-N3 can be broken down into 4 simple stages:
1) Firstly, the VS-40CPQ050-N3 checks for over voltage or surge inputs. A surge is an unwanted surge of electricity, often caused by lightning strikes or electrostatic discharges. If a surge is detected, the current is passed through the varistor and the capacitance element of the VS-40CPQ050-N3.
2) As the current passes through the element, the voltage level is regulated and limited.
3) The regulated and limited current then passes through the four PNP silicon diodes of the VS-40CPQ050-N3, which act as fast recovery, low forward voltage and low leakage rectifiers.
4) The four diodes then filter out any remaining unwanted AC components of the current, resulting in a pure DC current.
Therefore, the VS-40CPQ050-N3’s four diode rectifier array is designed to provide an efficient, cost-effective and reliable protection from overvoltage, transients and surges. As it is offered in a very small form factor and can operate up to 125°C, this rectifier array is the ideal choice for applications where space and efficiency are of utmost importance.
