PTC resettable fuses, or polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) Resettable Fuses, are special types of protection devices that disconnect the supply to a circuit and prevent any further power flow in the event of a short-circuit or overload.PTC fuses differ from conventional fuses in that they do not need to be replaced after an overcurrent event. Instead, a PTC fuse can be reset and the circuit resumed to its original state. This reset capability makes PTC resettable fuses ideal solutions for circuits that frequently experience overloads or where manual replacement of a fuse would otherwise be required.
The YPCJ0025T is a surface-mounted device suitable for medium-power applications. It is available in a RoHS compliant TO-236 package and has an operating temperature of -40°C to 125°C. The YPCJ0025T is a bi-stable device, meaning that it is able to switch between two different on/off states depending on current levels passing through it. In its initial state, the YPCJ0025T is “ON” and passes current. If a current higher than its rated trip level is passed through it, the device will switch into its second state, “OFF” and current will be blocked.
The YPCJ0025T works on the principle of PTC thermistors. At low current levels, the resistance of a PTC thermistor is low. When the current level reaches or exceeds its trip level, the temperature of the thermistor rises and the resistance increases. This increased resistance prevents any further current flow and the circuit is disconnected.
Once the overcurrent is removed, the temperature of the device drops and the resistance drops. This allows the circuit to resume normal operation. The YPCJ0025T has a wide range of applications including motor protection, short-circuit protection, over/undervoltage protection, and battery-charging protection.
The YPCJ0025T’s advantage over conventional fuses is its reset capability. In a conventional fuse, once it has tripped, current flow is permanently disrupted and a replacement fuse must be found and installed. With the YPCJ0025T, as soon as the current is reduced to a safe level, the device can be reset and the circuit resumed. The YPCJ0025T can thus save time and money that would otherwise have been required to replace a blown fuse.
In addition to its reset capability, the YPCJ0025T offers several other advantages over traditional fuses. It is highly resilient and able to endure extreme temperatures and shock and vibration.
