Multiple Conductor Cables and their Application Field and Working Principle
Multiple conductor cables are composed of multiple insulated conductors and are formed into one single package for convenient handling and installation. They are commonly found in various applications, both industrial and consumer-related, such as power cables, telephone wires, and appliances.
Power Cables
Power cables are responsible for transferring electric signals between two or more points. Typically, power cables have two to three insulated conductors made of copper, each of which has a different function. The purpose of these conductors is to ensure the correct flow of electric signals between the points of connection. Power cables are available in a myriad of sizes and configurations, depending on their intended use.
Telephone Wires
Telephone wires, as the name suggests, are the cables responsible for conveying telephone signals. Different types of telephone wires typically have two, three, or four insulated wires, although there are some cases where five wires may be used. These wires are usually made of copper and may be either twisted pairs or ribbon-like conductors. Telephone wires are usually made to carry both voice and data signals.
Appliances
Due to their flexibility and ability to carry high-power electric signals, multiple conductor cables are used in a variety of appliances. In some cases, these cables may have more than four wires, which can be used for various purposes such as controlling the speed and power of motors, providing safety devices with electrical energy, and supplying power to various sensors and other devices.
Working Principle of Multiple Conductor Cables
The working principle of multiple conductor cables is based on the principle of electrical induction, in which an electric current flowing through one conductor induces an electric current in another conductor. This is often referred to as “mutual induction”. In the case of multiple conductor cables, the principle of mutual induction applies to multiple conductors at the same time. This is what enables the transmission of signals among multiple wires.
In addition to mutual induction, multiple conductor cables also use the principle of capacitance, wherein two or more conductors are joined together and an electric charge is stored and discharged between them. This is used to reduce the amount of AC current that flows through the conductors, as well as to remove any unwanted electrical signals.
Lastly, multiple conductor cables can also be used for data transmission through coaxial cables or shielded cables. Coaxial cables are composed of a central conductor and one or more layers of insulation. The central conductor carries the signal, while the insulation shields the signal from external noise. Similarly, shielded cables use a metal sheath to protect the signal from noise.
