Optical sensors are used to detect the presence or absence of light energy and are commonly used for positioning or limit detection. Existing contactless sensors are able to detect a light source from a distance, and can be used in a wide range of applications, from toys to medical devices. The photointerrupter type, slot type, Transistor Output (RPI-352) is one type of optical sensor that is used in multiple industries.
The RPI-352 works on the principle of a light-blocking shutter. When a light-emitting diode (LED) illuminates a cylindrical light-shielding shutter, the shutter is blocked, a transistor switch in the sensor promptly responds to momentary interruptions in the interrupted light beam. The shallow slot is placed in front of an LED and equipped with a slot mask to generate an optical slot. The slots act as a mechanical barrier, allowing only some light to pass through.
The benefits of using the RPI-352 optical sensor in comparison to other types of optical sensors is that it can detect objects from a distance, has low power consumption, can operate without contact, and provides high reliability and accuracy. It is designed to work well in extensive environments without the need of extra protection. The RPI-352 is well suited for applications such as position detection, limit detection and speed detection.
The RPI-352 is outfitted with an LED emitter and a reverse-blocking photodiode. The emitter transmits a light beam that is blocked by the mask. When an object approaches the mask and interrupts the blocked light beam, the photodiode is reverse biased and the output changes state. The output power increases as the object moves towards the sensor, as the light beam is further interrupted. The high-sensitivity response allows for reliable operation with objects located up to 1.5mm away from the sensor.
The output of the RPI-352 is an open-collector transistor that is effectively saturated when the output is high (ON). The output is designed to be low impedance to minimize voltage drops and to keep potential current disturbance at minimum. The output can also be connected externally with resistors to regulate the current flow and extend the lifespan of the device.
The RPI-352 optical sensor is a simple and cost-effective solution for detecting objects in a variety of applications. It is used in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, security, factory automation, and medical. It is a reliable and robust sensor and can be programmed for a variety of settings. The low power consumption of the sensor makes it well suited for battery powered applications.
