RF Antennas

001-0022 Application Field and Working Principle

RF antennas are commonly used in wireless communication, broadcasting, satellite communications, radar, navigation, biomedical equipment, and other fields. They have the characteristics of wide frequency band, short transmission line, small size and light weight, and low cost. From the perspective of technology, radio antennas are used mainly in the form of electromagnetic wave radiation. According to the different shape and structure, they can be divided into two categories: receiving antennas and transmitting antennas. The receiving antenna receives electromagnetic wave radiation and converts it into electrical signals. The transmit antenna receives electrical signals and converts them into electromagnetic wave radiation. In general, receiving antennas have higher aperture gain than transmitting antennas; receiving antennas are more sensitive to signals than transmitting antennas. That is to say, under the same transmitting power, the receiving antenna can receive more electric energy and reach a lower receiving threshold. In the long distance transmission, low-frequency signals are usually easier to be collected and transmitted. In terms of working principle, when an electromagnetic wave is incident on an antenna, an electro-magnetic field and a current will be produced. According to the energy conversion law of electromagnetic waves, they absorb part of the energy and change it into other forms of energy. For transmitting antenna, energy will be changed into electrical energy, then radiated out by electromagnetic wave. While for the receiving antenna, energy will be changed into electric current signal. To achieve efficient antenna operation, it is very important to select the proper antenna and its associated components, such as matching circuits, transmission lines, and antennas, according to the frequency, gain, and direction of the electromagnetic wave radiation. In short, the RF antenna is a vital component in the field of wireless communication, broadcasting, and other related fields. Due to the wide range of frequencies, its antenna must be properly chosen and equipped with appropriate matching circuits, transmission lines and other components. With the correct antenna theory and selection, the RF system will be able to achieve maximum efficiency and minimal interference.
