Rectangular connectors are a type of electrical connector used for applications requiring connection between two or more electrical components. Connectors of this type are used in a variety of industries, including computer, telecommunications and automotive.Rectangular connectors, commonly referred to as “headers”, “receptacles” and “female sockets”, come in a variety of shapes, sizes and configurations. The most common configuration is a box-shaped “box header” which includes two sets of pins that are angled in opposite directions. Box headers are designed for connection between parts with disconnected wires. The pins on one half of the box header line up with holes on the other half which allows wires to be inserted and secured.Other configurations include “right angle” and “in-line” headers which are designed to fit different spaces and requirements. Right angle headers are ideal for tight spaces while in-line headers provide more flexibility in design.The working principle behind rectangular connectors is the use of contact combined with physical and chemical forces. Contacts are made when two components are pushed together. Contact areas must be both electrically compatible and with high mechanical strength to ensure a reliable connection. When contacts are forced together, physical and chemical forces combine to create an interlocking mechanical bond between the contacts. These forces increase the reliability of the connection by ensuring an interference fit and preventing the connectors from disconnecting during normal operation.In addition to mechanical forces, electrical current passing through the connector will create greater contact between the two surfaces, increasing the electrical bond between the two components. This is known as a “cold weld” and is a key feature of the working principle of rectangular connectors.Rectangular connectors are available in a wide range of shapes, sizes and configurations to meet the needs of different applications.
