Surge protection devices are critical components in today\'s technology-dependent world. They prevent damage to electronic and electrical devices by absorbing any sudden, sharp power surges and neutralizing them quickly. The semiconductor industry offers a broad range of surge protection devices for different applications. One of the most common of these is the TVS Varistors, MOVs, also known as transient voltage suppressors or transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS). The MOV is typically used to clamp fast transients in medium- voltage AC power lines. It is composed of a metal-oxide-varistor (MOV) and a gas discharge tube (GDT). The MOV is a voltage-dependent, nonlinear, bidirectional semiconductor device that attenuates high-voltage transient pulses. Its primary purpose is to reduce the magnitude of transient overvoltages in power lines and other electrical systems. This helps protect sensitive components and circuits from overvoltage damage.

The 0070.3561.T2 is a 27-Vrms Uni-directional Varistors with do-214 AC package. It consists of a MOV and a GDT that are used to give transient over-voltage protection to AC power lines. The MOV is made of zinc-oxide (ZnO) ceramic disc and it acts like a voltage- dependent varistor. When a current pulse or surge exceeds a certain level, the MOV will become highly conductive and quickly reduce the voltage. The MOV\'s current flow is bidirectional, meaning it operates both ways, and its voltage and current ratings are dependent on the surge protection application.

The MOV is made of highly conductive zinc oxide ceramic disc and it functions like a voltage dependent resistor. When a current pulse or surge exceeds a certain level, the MOV voltage will become highly conductive and quickly reduce the voltage. The MOV current flow is bidirectional and its voltage and current ratings are dependent on the surge protection application. The MOV\'s current flow is also limited by the GDT, which is capable of clocking very fast transients. The GDT is installed in the MOV\'s outer shell and its function is to quickly reduce the voltage when transients occur. The GDT can also absorb energy after the transient surge.

The GDT is made of non-linear insulating materials and it acts like an avalanche diode. When transients occur, it quickly reduces the voltage, allowing the MOV to remain in its normal operating state. The GDT also serves as a secondary level of protection when the MOV has been degraded or destroyed by extreme transients. This secondary level of protection enables the MOV to remain in its normal operating state, even after the transient surge has been reduced.

The 0070.3561.T2 provides excellent surge protection by combining a MOV and GDT in one package. It can withstand transient surges up to 27Vrms, and it is suitable for use in AC power lines for transient over-voltage protection.
