  Flat Flex Cables (FFCs) are utilized in a wide variety of applications, including consumer electronics, medical instruments, automotive industry, telecommunication and fiber optics. They are often used as a board to board or a board to device connection either as a sled connector or as backplane cable. FFCs have the ability to enable high-density data transmission with low profile, minimal crosstalk and minimal EMI.

  • Working principle:

  The main components of a FFC cable are an insulation conductor, a signal conductor, and a grounding conductor. The most common conductor is tin-plated copper and various insulation materials are available, such as polyamide, polyester, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride. All conductors are insulated from each other by one or more insulation layers. The contact between the conductors is created by either a soldering process or a crimp connection.

  When in use, the FFC cable is secured onto the board and each conductor is soldered to the board pad to make a secure electrical contact. The connection is reinforced by the use of an over-mold or strain relief that prevents the cable from pulling out of the connector. FFCs can also be used as a shield module or as a stand-alone connector.

  Ribbon jumper cables (RJCs) are often used for both power and signal connections in modern electronics. These are smaller diameter cables typically used to connect multiple boards and systems within a single device. They are available in various lengths and conductor counts up to 40. Often, a single RJC will have multiple multiplexed signals within the same cable.

  • Working principle:

  Ribbon jumper cables are composed of two parts, the connector and the cable. Connectors are used to terminate the cable as well as to provide strain relief and secure electrical contact between the wires. Connector materials are typically metal, plastic, or a combination of both. The cable is usually made up of several insulated conductors with a shielding conductor surrounding all of the wires. The insulation material on the conductors can be either plastic or rubber for increased flexibility.

  Typically, the ribbon jumper cable assembly is terminated on both ends and has a latch mechanism for secure mating. When the cable is mated to a board, the latch holds the connector in place and makes a good electrical contact with the traces. The contacts on the connector will then be soldered onto the board. Often, an additional strain relief is employed to make sure the connector doesn’t pull away from the board.
