Flat Flex Cables
Flat Flex Cables are a type of interconnect ribbon cable that is surprisingly versatile and complex in its application. A Flat Flex Cable is made up of a series of insulated wires and/or conductors that are woven into a flat ribbon formation. This ribbon formation gives the cable a high degree of flexibility and allows it to be used in a variety of scenarios where traditional ribbon cables might not be suitable.
Flat Flex Cables are generally used in three main types of applications, namely aerospace, consumer electronics, and telecommunications. In aerospace applications, Flat Flex Cables are used to interconnect a variety of components such as sensors, controllers, actuators and other systems required for the operation of an aircraft or other aerospace vehicle. It is also used in consumer electronics for the interconnection of various components in television sets, CD Players and other applications. In telecommunication applications, it is used for signal routing, transmission and other wiring needs.
Flat Flex Cables are typically composed of multiple insulated or un-insulated conductor elements that are woven together and into a ribbon form. The overall compose of the cable will depend upon the application. For example, if the cable is used in an aircraft application, the cable may be composed of stronger and more durable materials such as copper or aluminum. In consumer applications, the cable may be composed of a more flexible and lighter-weight material such as PVC or Teflon.
The working principle of a Flat Flex Cable is relatively simple. In essence, a electrical signal is created in the cable that is sent down each of the individual conductors within the ribbon formation. This signal then travels down the ribbon, with each conductor carrying its own signal, and terminating at the opposite end of the cable in the connector. This allows for signal transmission in one direction, and the end result is the ability to connect a variety of components through a single cable.
Ribbon Jumper Cables
Ribbon Jumper Cables are another type of interconnect ribbon cable used for similar applications as Flat Flex Cables. However, Ribbon Jumper Cables differ from Flat Flex Cables in a few key areas. First, while Flat Flex Cables are flexible ribbons, Ribbon Jumper Cables are typically rigid strips of cable that are designed to be used in a more permanent or semi-permanent manner. For example, Ribbon Jumper Cables are often used in areas in which a signal needs to be reliably transmitted in a specific way or manner.
The second major difference between Ribbon Jumper Cables and Flat Flex Cables is the number of conductors that are present. While Flat Flex Cables are typically made up of only a few conductors, Ribbon Jumper Cables are composed of multiple independently insulated conductors that are wired together in a consistent pattern. This independent wiring pattern allows for the various signals to be accurately and reliably transmitted throughout the entire length of the cable.
The working principle of a Ribbon Jumper Cable is overall quite simple. The many individual conductors in the cable are wired together in a pattern, and each of the conductors is insulated with respect to the others. A electrical signal is then submitted through the cable, with each individual conductor carrying its own signal, and these signals interact with one another in a specific way. At the end of the cable, the signal is then changed or transformed depending on the wiring pattern and utilized in the application.
