Flat Flex
Flat Flex cables are a type of flat, ribbon cable which are widely used in machines, system controllers, air compressors and automotive systems for reliable and fast signal transmission. They typically comprise of a flat, flexible, insulated material with a conductive surface printed onto it. This conductor can either be made of a particular metal or an alloy, or can be gold plated. The flat flex cables may have varying numbers of conductive surfaces, depending on requirements for the system, ranging from two to five contacts.
Flat Flex cables are characterized by their electrical current carrying capacity, their low-temperature characteristics, their resistance to pressure, their mechanical resistance and their flat profile. The electrical current capacity of a flat flex cable is higher than that of a normal ribbon cable and can even be much higher when the right metal is used for the conductor. Additionally, flat flex cables feature higher electrical resistivity than other cables, making them ideally suited to low-voltage and low-signal applications.
Flat flex cables can also be used in a variety of extremes, from hot to cold temperatures, without losing its performance. Furthermore, due to its flat profile, it reduces the crosstalk between parallel cables and can be easily routed in narrow spaces. Moreover, they are available in different thicknesses, which helps to reduce the weight of the overall system.
Ribbon Jumper Cables
Ribbon jumper cables are similar to flat flex cables, however, they are typically composed of an insulated material with multiple conductive surfaces running along the length. The cable will usually range between 2 and 5 conductive surfaces, which may be metal or gold plated surfaces, depending on the that the conductor is made from. This allows them to be used in applications that require a higher power transfer than flat flex cables and can be used with higher voltages.
Ribbon jumper cables are highly reliable and durable due to their construction. Unlike flat flex cables, ribbon jumper cables have more flexibility which allows them to be used in a variety of spaces and angles. Furthermore, their design also helps in reducing noise and crosstalk between the multiple conductive surfaces. Furthermore, the length of the cable can be adjusted to suit the application.
Ribbon jumper cables are also highly secure due to the clear insulation which helps to prevent fiber contamination and electrical noise. Additionally, they are also resistant to water and are immune to the effects of UV radiation. Moreover, they are much lighter than flat flex cables, meaning they can be used in a variety of industries with varying weight distribution requirements, such as in aviation applications.
Working Principle
Flat flex and ribbon jumper cables work on the same principle, in which the conductor essentially acts as a bridge between two electrically connected terminals. The conductor is usually a metal or alloy strip, or can be a gold plated conductor that is in contact with both terminals. When electricity is applied, the heat caused by the resistance in the cable results in current flow through the conductor.
In a flat flex cable, the electrical current only flows through the conductor, while in ribbon jumper cables it flows through the multiple conductive surfaces. As the electrical current passes through the conductor, its resistance causes a certain amount of heat to be generated, which is absorbed by the insulation surrounding the conductor. This heat is then dissipated by the external environment.
The current flow in a flat flex or ribbon jumper cable is proportional to the time the cable is exposed to a potential voltage, i.e. higher potential voltage will cause the current flow to be higher and will increase the heat generated. The current flow is also affected by the resistance of the cable, which in turn is affected by the temperature of the environment and the type of insulation used.
Conclusion
Flat flex and ribbon jumper cables are flexible, insulated cables that are ideal for a variety of applications, such as machines, systems controllers, air compressors and automotive systems. They work on the same principle in which the conductor acts as a bridge between two electrically connected terminals. Flat flex cables are more suited to low voltage and low signal applications due to their low resistivity, while ribbon jumper cables are more suitable for high voltage and high signal applications due to their increased flexibility and electrical current carrying capacity.
