The working principle of both flat flex and ribbon jumper cables is similar. The insulation or conductor tape provides protection for the inner data conductors and the insulated wires are wound around this tape. This winding process offers a much greater space efficiency for the data transmission than a standard open conductor cable, and allows for the cable to be very flexible and bendable.

The higher the density and thinner the wires, the higher the speed. The traditional flat flex and ribbon jumper cables are ideal for the majority of applications due to their low cost and ease of use. For more complex applications that require higher data speeds and more stringent environmental requirements, more sophisticated cables such as braided and shielding cables can be used.
