Flat Flex, Ribbon Jumper Cables, are widely used cables for interconnecting items that have little, or no space. An example of application of flat flex cables being to connect the keys on a computer keyboard to the circuit board. Designers who need to minimize the size of an assembly may use flat flex jumper cables, as for instance when running USB, or HDMI cables between two computers, or other compatible devices.
The primary components of the construction of a flat flex cable include a florescent inner stranded core, a polyurethane coating, a dielectric film, and a unique conductive trace structure. The core provides both mechanical strength and electrical conductivity along the path of the cable, while the coating serves as an extra barrier to protect the core from any external damage. The dielectric film is used as an insulating layer between the core and the conductive trace, helping to prevent short circuits that could damage interconnected components. Finally, the conductive trace carries the electrical signals along the length of the cable.
Flat flex cables are highly customizable in their length, number of conductors, and dimensions. This style of cable is available in both single- and multi-conductor configurations which are supported by a common connector. Additionally, the conductor strands of the cable itself may be constructed from a multitude of materials including gold, silver, and copper.
The working principle of flat flex cables is relatively simple. The conductive trace is designed to carry energy from one side of the cable to the other. This is done by sending a current or a pulse through the trace, which is then transmitted through the dielectric film into the cores. This signal then circulates through the cores of the cable until it reaches the other side, where the cable is then connected to the receiving component.
Flat flex cables are also very durable, and are often used in applications which require repeated assembly and disassembly. This is due to the fact that the cables remain unaffected by repetitive flexing, which helps to reduce wear and tear on the cable. Furthermore, flat flex cables are highly resistant to abrasion, corrosion, and vibrations, making them ideal for applications subjected to dynamic environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures and humidity.
While flat flex cables are widely used and offer tremendous benefits, they can also suffer from some drawbacks. The primary limitation is their limited bandwidth, as flat flex cables are unable to transfer data at the same rate as traditional cables. Additionally, flat flex cables have limited data transfer rate due to the size of the conductor and the number of conductors in the cable. Finally, flat flex cables are not as cost effective as traditional wiring options, making them more difficult to justify for budget conscious projects.
Overall, flat flex cables have numerous advantages which make them ideal for certain applications. They are small, durable, low-cost, and highly customizable, making them suitable for a wide variety of uses. As such, flat flex cables continue to be utilized in a variety of industries, where they play a crucial role in bridging connections between machines, devices, and components.
