Fuses
0251005.NAT1L, more commonly known as fuses, is a type of appropriately named component which typically finds use in electrical circuits as an overcurrent protection device. When used in such an application, fuses are designed to act as a sacrificial part, breaking the circuit when too much current passes through it, thus protecting other components from possible damage due to the surplus current.
Application
The most common application for fuses is in the protector against overloads and short-circuits. This is because, in its ideal state, a fuse is designed to break when the current passing through it surpasses a certain limit, thus protecting any other components connected before or after it from any potential risk due to the overload of current.
In addition, fuses can be used for isolating parts of a circuit or components in order to make it easier for maintenance personnel to isolate the performance of each part, or to make sure a circuit is de-energized when not required.
Working Principle
Ideally, fuses can be thought of as electrical resistors which act as a medium for current. However, when the sufficient current the fuse element was designed for is exceeded, it will "blow", effectively breaking the circuit and preventing any further damage due to the overcurrent. This is achieved thanks to a fuse element which is usually made of a conductor such as a metal alloy or a strip of wire, coated with a non-conductive substance such as a type of clay which softens and melts under rising temperatures.
When the current in a circuit exceeds the designed limit, heat is generated, which softens and melts the coating of the fuse element. As the non-conductive material melts, the fuse element is then exposed and the circuit is broken, stopping the further passage of current, preventing any possible damage due to the surge. Of course, this entire process happens almost instantaneously, and therefore offers quick and efficient protection to the circuit.
Summary
Fuses are a common type of electrical component which is designed to break a circuit when the current running through them passes a certain limit, thus protecting any other components in the circuit. Fuses can be used for overload protection, short-circuit protection, and for isolating certain components of the circuit. Their working principle is based on electricity\'s natural behavior of generating heat when passing through any medium, which is used to melt the non-conductive surface coating of the fuse element, thus breaking the circuit and preventing any further damage due to the rise in current.
