Sockets for ICs, Transistors
Sockets for ICs, transistors and other types of integrated circuits are an essential part of any electrical design. Sockets allow integrated circuits to be easily replaced and swapped with different types without soldering, eliminating the need for constant removal and re-soldering of an integrated circuit every time a different type is used. Not only are they useful in repairing existing equipment, but sockets are also invaluable when faster prototyping of an electronics project is required.
In general, a socket has two basic components. A base or socket adapter is used to provide the contacts for the IC and the housing from which the IC is mounted.
The base of the socket is the interface between the IC pins and the circuit board tracks. This is the part of the socket that must be placed into the board and secured. The most commonly used bases are linear or round strip terminals. These linear strips provide a series of contacts across the bottom of the socket in which the IC legs are placed, making electrical contact.
The other component of the socket is the housing. The housing is the part of the socket that holds the IC in place in the board and secures it in place. Generally, the housing of a socket is fabricated from molded plastic or other non-metallic material. It is designed to perfectly fit around the IC, preventing it from moving and providing mechanical protection for the fragile semiconductor.
To use a socket, the base of the socket is secured to the circuit board tracks, and the IC is then aligned and placed into the housing. Once the IC has been placed in the socket, it may be removed and replaced with a different IC at any time without needing to be resoldered.
Sockets can also be used to prevent damage to the ICs. The housing part of a socket will often have a cut-out allowing pressure to be applied to the IC chip to ensure that the legs are all securely inserted into the base. This prevents any accidental damage caused by too much pressure being applied to the IC.
Sockets for ICs, transistors, and other integrated circuits are a convenient and cost-effective way of mounting and replacing integrated circuits on a circuit board. By making it easier to swap out components without the need for soldering, sockets save time and money, and also help to protect delicate ICs from damage.
