Sockets for ICs, Transistors (04-0513-11H application field and working principle)
Integrated Circuit (IC) sockets, also known commonly as chip sockets, are used to connect ICs or transistors on sleeves or to place them in a separate or optional mounting device. They come in various sizes and formats depending on the size and complexity of the IC that needs to be mounted. IC sockets serve as connector between the IC and other components in a circuit, or between the IC and its various associated packages
Chip socket technology is divided into three categories: ZIF (zero insertion force), PGA (pin grid array) and PLCC (plastic leadless chip carriers). All three are designed to provide direct connection and a secure electrical interface.
ZIF sockets allow for easy insertion and removal of ICs for loading of unattached ICs into a target device. They are constructed of either elastomeric contact or soldered cantilever contact pins which offer a robust, reliable electrical connection of ICs with a minimal amount of contact resistance. ZIF sockets also come in various sizes including 14-pin, 28-pin, 36-pin, 48-pin and 64-pin, allowing them to accommodate most small-package ICs.
PGA sockets, on the other hand, are used for mounting on printed circuit boards and provide permanent protection of the IC. They are often referred to as “pin-grid” or “pin-grid array” sockets because they consist of a grid of solder balls/pins that can be soldered directly to a PCB. PGA sockets provide excellent signal integrity when compared to ZIF sockets. They can also be designed to accommodate various IC sizes, making them ideal for applications requiring secure connections for or frequent removal of the ICs.
The last IC socket type is the PLCC socket. These are used for mounting energy-saving ICs and for high-performance VLSI and memory applications. PLCC sockets have raised pads or lead tips that extend up above the socket’s surface which sit slightly above the IC and provide improved signal integrity. The raised pads also help reduce transmission delay and power consumption, making PLCC sockets an excellent choice for high-density circuit boards.
In general, IC sockets provide stable, secure connections and protection for the ICs they are used with. When selecting an IC socket, it is important to ensure you choose the right one to provide reliable connection of the IC to the circuit board and other components in your application. Also consider the size and pin density of the IC socket you are using, as well as the package type, to ensure tight connection and maximum protection.
