Rectangular connectors are designed for efficient power and signal connections between two printed circuit boards. The rectangular connectors provide an economical and reliable way for engineers and hobbyists to quickly route connections between electronic components on printed circuit boards in applications where their placement on the board is not fixed or can be changed multiple times. Rectangular connectors can be broadly divided into three main types based on their construction and shape. These include arrays, edge types, and mezzanine.

Array Connectors

Array connectors, sometimes referred to as pin-and-socket connectors, consist of a plug and a receptacle assembly. The plug is made up of male pins arranged in a certain order/pattern, while the receptacle is made up of corresponding female sockets. The electrical and mechanical connections between the two assemblies are made when the two parts are mated or connected. Array connectors offer increased flexibility in routing the wire on printed circuit boards, and can be usually mated several times.

Edge Type Connectors

Edge type connectors are designed for use between two pcbs with wire connections in the same plane and the lack of a third or mating dimension. Edge type connectors offer low-profile contacts with an insurmountable uniform contact force which ensures good contact between the two parts, thus enabling reliable signal transmission. These connectors are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and pitches, with a range of contact counts up to 40.

Mezzanine Connectors

Mezzanine connectors are designed for board-to-board interconnections. These connectors provide more space to route additional wires between two printed circuit boards by functioning as an interconnect between them. Mezzanine connectors typically have a number of signal contacts on one side and a number of ground contacts on the other side. The ground contacts ensure improved electrical connection and enable users to extend the mezzanine connection between two board edges without board spacing.

Application

Rectangular connectors are widely used in a variety of applications in multiple industries. These connectors are used in the consumer electronics and industrial automation industries for a huge range of applications that include displays, motors, breakers, and ATM machines. Other applications where rectangular connectors are increasingly being used include medical and telecommunication equipment, computer systems, instrumentation, and military/defense.

Working Principle

The rectangular connector assembly works by making use of a male connector part known as the plug, and a female connector part known as the receptacle assembly. This forms an electrical connection when the two parts are mated or connected. When this connection is established, the electrical signals travel from one connector to the other. The connection is reliable and provides a strong mechanical and electrical link between the two items.

In terms of the different types of rectangular connectors, the array connectors are linked by inserting and interlocking the pins and sockets in order to gain electrical connection. The edge type connectors are usually linked by inserting the tabs or pins on one side into the slots or receptacles in the other side, and secured by latch or screws. Finally, the mezzanine connector is an interconnect between two board edges and helps to extend the connection without board spacing. The connection is maintained by pressing the tabs in either side of the mezzanine connector together until a secure fit is achieved.
