%FFC, FPC (Flat Flexible) Connectors, Flat flexible cables (FFCs) and flexible printed circuits (FPCs) provide the electronics industry with a convenient method of routing signals and power between two electronic devices, often on the same printed circuit board (PCB). FFCs and FPCs are used extensively in small electronic products such as cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), hard drives, and digital cameras. They allow space saving designs that can be quickly and easily rerouted within a PCB to accommodate component and feature modifications.Flat flexible cables connect an electronic device to another device or board using special connectors. FFCs are generally flat, ribbon-like cables that are quite thin, alternating conductors and insulation layers. The smallest FPCs are used in applications such as mobile phone keypads and liquid crystal displays (LCDs).Flat flexible connectors are available in many sizes and shapes to serve many different applications. The type selected is typically based on the size, shape, and type of application. The most common FFC connector is the 0.50mm pitch, single row connector, which is the industry standard spacing used on most small form factor applications. A single row FFC connector is available in both 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18-pin configurations, depending on the size and shape desired. The 0.50mm pitch allows for very tight routing in a small form factor and offers room for a much larger conductor than a standard soldered-in lead would. The 0.50mm connector is also available in a double row configuration, which can provide connectivity from twice as many wires.In addition to the flat flexible cables and FPCs, the industry also offers 0.8mm and 1.25mm pitch connectors. These connectors have a larger conductor size, but require significantly more routing space than the 0.50mm pitch. The 1.25mm pitch is most commonly used for higher current handling applications, and is sometimes used for mass termination boards, where dozens of connectors need to be integrated into a single board.The working principle of the FFC and FPC connectors is fairly straightforward. The connectors contain two basic pieces: a male connector and a female connector. The male connector is typically soldered or crimped onto the end of the FFC or FPC, while the female connector is typically mounted to the PCB. When these two connectors are inserted into each other, a secure electrical connection is formed. These connectors can also be used to join two PVC cables in the same manner. In addition, the newest and most innovative connectors are designed with an integrated locking mechanism, which further ensures the connection is secure.Overall, FFC and FPC connectors are an excellent option for small form factor applications. They allow for tight routing in a small space and have a high current handling capacity. They are also easily repositioned, making it easy to reroute signals and power as needed without having to replace the entire connector.
