Backplane Connectors - DIN 41612 are used to reliably connect components in electronic equipment, such as backplanes, servers, routers, or other such devices. The DIN 41612 is a standard, DIN-specified connector family developed by the German standards body DIN Deutsches Institut fur Normung. The standard connectors measure between 16 to 156 pins and are rectangular with two rows of contact pins on a single circuit board, typically configured in two rows of nine or twelve pins. Besides their layout, they are known for their reliability, durability, and robustness, all key factors when devices need to safely and successfully operate.

Common Applications

While many industries are using DIN 41612 backplane connectors, some of the more common are in computers, networking, communication, and industrial automation. They are often used to interconnect boards, printed wiring board, and other I/O boards in CPUs, backplanes, racks, and servers. They are designed to be either surface mounted or can be mounted on rear panel with screws. They are also commonly used in systems where printing cards are used such as motion control systems, video capture cards, and gaming consoles.

Specifications

The three major features of the DIN 41612 connector family are the depth and number of contact pins, the arrangement of the contact pins, and the shape of the case. The connectors have a full metal hood that shields the terminals, and the case shape is designed to be easily inserted or removed from the backplane. The connector also has an inner flange which is supposed to provide extra protection against vibration, shock, and other environmental hazards. The pins are arranged in either three, four, five, or six different configurations, which can be specified by the customer to meet the desired requirements. In terms of depth, the top and bottom portions of the connector measure between 0.4 and 2.16 inches, with the space between the two rows of contact pins measuring between 0.09 and 1.1 inches.

Working Principle

The working principle of the DIN 41612 connectors is simple yet effective. The two rows of pins of the connector are inserted into the backplane and a locking feature is employed for a secure connection. As the connector is inserted into the backplane, the pins make contact with the contacts of the backplane which provides the electrical connection. The locking mechanism helps prevent accidental removal or displacement of the connector.
