Backplane Connectors - DIN 41612

Backplane connectors are used to create and maintain electrical connections between different boards on a backplane. The DIN 41612 connector, a product developed by the Deutsches Institut fur Normung e.V. (DIN), is a replacement for the Eurocard, a predecessor to modern PC connection systems. The DIN 41612 connector was originally designed for use in industrial computing and military equipment, but is now commonly used in many industrial and consumer applications.

Design

The DIN 41612 connector is available in a range of sizes, between two and 12 rows, to accommodate different board configurations. In all designs, the individual pins on the connector\'s "male" side are the same size and provide electrical connection to the "female" side. The contact pins on the female side of the connector are arranged in columns, and each one can accommodate two pins on the male side. Each pin contains two or three contacts, depending on the size of the connector. As such, the two-row DIN 41612 connector has eight contact points, while the twelve-row style has up to 44.
