A shunt and jumper are devices used to provide and route electrical currents wherever necessary, either short-term or long-term. Even though at first glance a shunt and a jumper may appear to be the same, they are meant to perform quite different purposes, yet both of them are easy to identify and install.
A shunt is a short-length of metal, usually copper or brass, that is installed between two points in a circuit and can measure voltage. This device is used to monitor and measure the current flow in a circuit. A shunt is typically connected in parallel to the equipment, unlike a jumper, and acts as a bridge allowing current to pass between two locations. It is usually situated outside of the equipment and does not affect the normal operation of the device.
Shunts are used to measure the current in a circuit because it is designed with specific characteristics, usually predetermined by the manufacturer, to create a known resistance. This resistance will cause a small drop in voltage at the location where the shunt is connected, meaning that the voltage can be measured across the shunt. The resistance is low enough to barely affect the amount of current being passing through the circuit which leaves the normal operation unimpeded.
Usage of shunts is common in many electrical applications, such as power grid systems, automotive electric systems, medical equipment, control systems, robotics, drone engineering and many others. This way the user can send signals across distances with minimal power loss and have the current measured and monitored easily. It is a reliable and widely used device that helps to ensure that certain levels of current are never exceeded and that the current is delivered evenly across the entire circuit.
For its part a jumper is a wire or set of wires usually made from copper, gold or silver, and is used to bridge connections between several points or parts of an electrical device, such as a computer or circuit. Jumpers usually connect the two ends of a broken or damaged part within a circuit, bringing the two pieces together again and creating current continuity. Therefore, jumpers are used to make temporary or permanent changes to an electrical device or circuit without physically disconnecting or reconnecting any wires.
Jumpers are usually on the outer side of the device, unlike a shunt, and the connections between the jumpers and the ends of the broken part must be secure to ensure that the current flows properly and without interruption. Jumpers are also used in the development and testing of new devices, allowing the engineer to switch the circuits and alter the functioning of the device in order to allow for testing of new ideas or prototypes.
Jumpers are essential for providing a temporarily connection between two contacts without having to actually make a physical connection that may be long and difficult to carry out. This is why they are widely used in PCBs and in many other electric circuits, such as in automotive systems like fuel pumps or alarm systems. Likewise, on computers they are used to configure the parts and the different connection ports in order to allow for a specific functioning of the device.
Therefore, although at first sight they may seem alike and possess some similarities, shunts and jumpers are two quite different devices meant for completely different tasks and applications. A shunt is meant to measure the current in a circuit, usually being situated outside of the equipment and thus not affecting the normal operation of it, while a jumper is designed to bridge connections between points in an electrical device either temporarily or permanently.
