A shunt and jumper are devices used to provide and route electrical currents wherever necessary, either short-term or long-term. Even though at first glance a shunt and a jumper may appear to be the same, they are meant to perform quite different purposes, yet both of them are easy to identify and install.
A shunt is a short-length of metal, usually copper or brass, that is installed between two points in a circuit and can measure voltage. This device is used to monitor and measure the current flow in a circuit. A shunt is typically connected in parallel to the equipment, unlike a jumper, and acts as a bridge allowing current to pass between two locations. It is usually situated outside of the equipment and does not affect the normal operation of the device.
Shunts are used to measure the current in a circuit because it is designed with specific characteristics, usually predetermined by the manufacturer, to create a known resistance. Jumpers usually connect the two ends of a broken or damaged part within a circuit, bringing the two pieces together again and creating current continuity. Therefore, jumpers are used to make temporary or permanent changes to an electrical device or circuit without physically disconnecting or reconnecting any wires.
