D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Contacts
D-sub connectors, also known as D-shaped connectors, are components used to establish a connection between two separate pieces of equipment. Most commonly found in the form of male and female pins, the D-type connectors are used to connect cable conductors, transfer and route data, and reliably carry electrical current between two separate sources. The D-type connector name comes from the distinctive shape of the contact pin, which appears like a capital letter D when looking at the side profile.
Standard D-sub contacts come in two types; machined contacts and stamped contacts, differentiated by the manufacturing process used for production. D-sub contact pins are made to specific lengths, so that when two are placed together they become a complete connection. The most common materials used to produce D-sub contacts are brass, bronze, stainless steel, and a variety of other metals and alloys. Contact material is chosen based on application and intended usage, for example, stainless steel is used when working with corrosive materials, or brass contacts are used when low electrical resistance is needed.
Most D-sub contacts are CNC machined, meaning they are cut to exact measurements using computerized numerical control machines. The machining process involves milling or turning the contact pin, thread-cutting, back-chamfering, and more. During production, extreme precision is needed to create a precise hole in the metal, and a less precise hole is made for a thread cutter to be used. The machining process is the most common, but stamped contacts are also used for many applications. Stamped contacts are made using a stamping die that punches the contact into metal, providing a strong hold.
The contact pins feature a specific male and female tip, which is the portion of the pin that actually makes contact with the other source. D-sub connectors have a number of advantages over traditional flat connectors or ribbon cables, including better contact reliability, improved data transmission speed, and better electrical insulation. The contact pins come in all shapes, sizes, and configurations, and have been used in a variety of different applications, including computers, networking equipment, communications systems, and industrial automation.
The working principle of D-sub contact pins is relatively simple. As two contact pins are placed together, the connection is made by allowing electricity and data to transfer through the mate of the male and female connectors. In order for the contact pin to make a secure connection, small pins called rivets or crimps are used in the female connector to hold and secure the contact in place. These small pins have small holes that allow the rivets to be placed inside and then securely pressed against the contact pin. The rivets make a very tight connection that provides reliable electrical contact. In addition, the contact pins have a special coating that helps prevent corrosion.
D-sub contact pins are a reliable and affordable form of connection used in a variety of applications. The pins are strong and durable and can be used in high-temperature and high-pressure environments. Additionally, the contact pins can be used to securely transfer electrical power, data, and signals. D-sub contact pins are an essential component of nearly every electronic device, and can be used to reliably transfer and route data in a more cost-effective and reliable manner than traditional ribbon cables and flat connectors.
