Flat Flex, Ribbon Jumper Cables
Flat flex and Ribbon jumper cables are utilized in industrial, commercial and consumer applications. The key difference between the two is the presence of copper wires within a flexible insulation layer, as opposed to a single solid insulation layer. Another difference is that the flexibility of these cables is different depending on the amount of copper and insulation thickness.
Flat flex cables are thinner in form, offering more flexibility than Ribbon cables, which are more rigid and designed for extreme temperature environments. Flat flex cables are used in a variety of applications, from interconnects, appliance wiring and electronics communication, among others. Flat flex cables are available in a range of sizes, with conductors of varying widths, connections types and such. These cables have an extremely low profile, making them ideal for device and equipment interconnects where clearance is limited in both length and width.
On the other hand, Ribbon jumper cables are designed to be more rigid, offering an extremely strong strain relief construction due to their insulation sleeve. This allows them to be suitable for a wide range of high-temperature applications such as electronic ovens, engine connections for automotive, transportation and aerospace applications. Ribbon jumper cables are also used in medical devices, instrumentation, ATM machines and industrial control applications. The key differences between Ribbon and Flat flex cables are largely due to their construction. Ribbon cables have solid, rather than flexible insulation layers, and are preferably used in environments where rigidity and strength are more important than flexibility.
Flat flex and Ribbon jumper cables are built using a similar process. Conductors are typically laid-up into an efficient, compact form factor, which are then insulated with thermoplastic or fluoropolymer compounds. The insulation layer also provides strength and electrical insulation. Lengths are also usually shorter than the reach of flat flex cables, and connectors are not easily visible and narrower in section. Lastly, the flexible cables are easier to route in limited spaces due to their small footprint.
The availability of ribbon jumper cables is especially useful when it comes to design applications. Straight-through, two-wire ribbon jumper cables come in various standard lengths and thicknesses, allowing users to select the best size for their application. For a more specialized application like robotic motion control, custom-cut ribbon jumper cables are also available, allowing engineers to select precisely the length, thickness and insulation layers desired.
In summary, Flat flex and Ribbon jumper cables are used in a variety of industrial, commercial and consumer applications. Flat flex is generally used when flexibility and a low-profile form factor is desired, while Ribbon jumper cables are preferable when robustness, vibration and high temperature tolerance are needed. Flat flex and Ribbon jumper cables are made in a similar fashion, with insulated conductors laid-up into a form-factor, which is then insulated and cut to length. Both are available in standard and custom lengths and widths.
