Flat Flex (FF) and Ribbon Jumper Cables (RJC) are widely used in applications such as telecom, computer and audio visual systems. In these applications, FF and RJC are used to connect components in order to transmit electronic signals and power. FF and RJC are a type of flexible printed wiring technology, where electrical contacts are printed onto the substrate.FF and RJC are made from two layers of flexible polyimide or polyester substrate material which are laminated together. A copper trace or wiring is then printed onto one or both sides of the flex material, providing electrical connectivity between the two contact points. The copper traces consist of a sequence of conductive elements on each side of the substrate, connected by bonding wires. This arrangement is usually referred to as a ‘meander’.The flexibility of FF and RJC makes them well suited for applications which require flexible or tight turns such as consumer electronics, audio visual systems, professional video equipment, computer networks and telecommunications equipment. The use of FF and RJC in these applications offers several advantages over traditional hardwired connections. Firstly, using flexible flieds allows for longer cable runs and less cable clutter, allowing cables to conform to the shape of a particular application. Secondly, the use of FF and RJC is significantly faster and easier than traditional hardwiring thanks to its quick connect/disconnect design.The most common type of FF and RJC is the ‘low profile’ connector. These connectors have very thin, flat cable bodies that are able to more easily fit into tight or narrow spaces. The low profile type of FF and RJC usually has contacts on both sides of the cable body, and each contact point on the cable includes an individual crimp post which is used to make the electrical connection.FF and RJC can also be found in other components such as specialized connectors, panel or chassis mount products, and terminations. Connectors are used to join multiple cables together or to provide for a connection between two pieces of equipment. Terminations provide a method for connecting wires and cable assemblies to a variety of electrical items.In summary, FF and RJC provide a reliable, cost effective and flexible alternative for many applications requiring cable or electrical connections. Their small size and ease of use makes them ideal for many types of applications, including audio/visual, telecommunications, and computer systems. They are also well suited for use in tight or difficult to access areas, and can be easily connected/disconnected as needed.
