Rectangular Connectors - Headers, Receptacles, Female Sockets have a wide range of applications in a variety of industries and are a commonly used form of interconnection. These connectors are designed to integrate electrical conductors into mechanical structures and are ideal for controlling and sensing applications. They can be found in electronics, automotive, industrial, commercial, and other applications, as well as in many new consumer electronics applications.

The basic principles behind the operation of rectangular connectors are the same regardless of the specific application. This is made possible by the variety of contact designs and different insulation types available. The contact configurations of headers, receptacles, female sockets, and other types of rectangular connectors can be tailored to a particular application, depending on its requirements. These contact configurations typically include “male” and “female” designs that mate together to form a plug and socket connection. Certain contact designs allow for “pin in hole” or Push-in/Push-out designs where no tools are required.

Rectangular connectors are constructed using an insulated housing which houses the contact pins or sockets. These contact pins, or sockets, are typically machined from either metal or plastic materials. These pins, or sockets, are then mounted into the connector housing and the external insulation is placed over the contacts. Depending on the application, the contacts may be located on both the male and female sides of the connector or just on the male side.

Headers and receptacles are commonly used with power and signal applications which require the transfer of large currents. Commonly used on circuit boards, these connectors provide the connection between the PCB and the device. The header connections are made up of a pin, or socket, mounted on the PCB, with the mating receptacle mounted on the device. The receptacle is typically made up of a socket, or female contact, mounted on the device with the mating header mounted on the PCB.

Female Sockets are common in low voltage and transmission applications. They offer protection from electrostatic discharge (ESD) as well as good signal integrity. Commonly used to connect wiring harnesses to devices such as switches they are typically constructed of thermoplastic or metal. They offer a secure connection and are well-suited to applications which require higher levels of reliability and durability.

Rectangular connectors are essential components of any electrical system. They offer a versatile and reliable solution for most any application and are widely used in a variety of industries. Their contact configurations and insulation types can be tailored to the application’s requirements, making them ideal for controlling and sensing applications.
