D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Contacts
The D-Sub connector, also known as a D-shaped connector, is a common type of electrical connector used for a variety of purposes. It is a round, metallic cylinder that is designed to fit into a pre-determined space in order to connect two pieces of equipment. D-Sub connectors are available in two basic shapes – straight-line and straight-exiting for added strength. The two basic shapes are designed for a variety of applications including medical, military, and consumer electronics products. The D-Sub connector is a two-part system. The first part is the metal shell and the second part is the contact, also known as a pin or socket. The contact is the active component of the connector and is responsible for making the connection between the two pieces of equipment. The contact is either a metal pin or a metal socket depending on the application. Metal pins are the most common contacts used for consumer electronics and medical applications, while metal sockets are used for military and industrial applications. The contact is typically held in place by a snap or screw. It is also typically attached to the shell with solder and/or crimps. Once the contact is secured to the shell, the connection is complete and ready for use.The D-Sub connector is often referred to as a “high power” type of connector. This is because of its ability to handle power ratings ranging from 20amps to up to 600amps (for industrial and military applications). This type of connector is ideal for high power applications, such as battery chargers, charging docks, and electric vehicle charging. When selecting a D-Sub connector, be sure to consider the desired application. Contacts made from different materials, such as brass or stainless steel, are typically designed for specific applications. For example, brass contacts are typically used in consumer electronics due to their superior electrical and thermal properties, while stainless steel contacts are used for high power military and industrial applications. In addition, be sure to consider the size of the connector as well as the pin/socket configuration. The standard D-Sub connectors range in size from 9 to 44 contacts with the 9 position being the smallest size. The largest D-Sub connectors can accommodate up to 8,000 contacts. Finally, when selecting the right D-Sub connector for your application be sure to evaluate the available environmental ratings. Different ratings identify how environmentally friendly a particular connector is. There are a variety of environmental ratings including moisture, temperature, vibration, corrosion, and shock.D-Sub connectors are an essential piece of equipment for a variety of applications. They are designed to meet the unique needs of the environment in which they are intended to be used. Knowing the features and specifications of each type of connector will help ensure that you select the right one for your application. The specific data is subject to PDF, and the above content is for reference
