Backplane Connectors - DIN 41612DIN 41612 is a standard for rectangular connectors used for the electrical interconnection of two printed-circuit boards mounted in parallel without an intervening device. The pins of the connectors are arranged in a variety of ways which allows for flexibility in the design of electronics systems. The two primary types of connectors are male and female. The male connectors have a pin pattern which will mate with a female connector pattern and the female connectors have a pin pattern which will mate with a male connector pattern.The most significant component of the DIN 41612 standard is the application field which defines the types of applications for which the connectors are suitable. The standard defines four application fields; low power (limited to 7A per row), standard (7A – 20A per row), high power (20A – 50A per row) and extra high power (above 50A per row). The standard also defines specific categories within each application field to further classify the connectors. The working principle of DIN 41612 connectors is based upon the principle of electrical contact between the mating components. The electrical contacts are either male and female, or male and female accessible, depending on the application. The contacts are designed to fit on the mating printed-circuit boards. The contacts are held in place by a locking mechanism and they are designed to mate and engage properly by means of a rotating cam. The cam is designed to create an electrical connection when it is rotated in a clockwise direction.The contacts are designed to carry either high or low current and are categorized by their current carrying capacity. The designation for high current contacts is 11A and for low current contacts is 7A or less. The connectors are also rated in terms of their electrical insulation property, with grades of up to 4kv AC.The DIN 41612 connectors are designed for a variety of applications. The applications could include computer systems, network equipment, industrial control equipment, instrumentation equipment, communication equipment and automation systems. The standard defines connectors for use in both high and low power applications. Depending on the application, the pins of the connectors may be arranged in a variety of ways. For example, the pins may be arranged in rows, columns or a combination of the two.The connectors are designed to provide reliable and efficient interconnections between various circuit elements on separate printed circuit boards. The connector could also be used in motor control systems, signal transmission systems and in systems where data and electrical power transmission is required. The DIN 41612 connectors provide a secure, reliable and cost effective method for enabling the electrical interconnections of two boards mounted in parallel.
