D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Contacts
1-745269-0 application field and working principle refers to a type of D-Sub (aka D-Shaped) connector contact. These connectors are extremely versatile, supporting a wide variety of electrical configurations, applications, and terminals. The design of these contacts allows for the use of contact gaps, which reduces the maximum contact resistance.
D-Sub connectors consist of three main parts which are the actual contacts, the insulator/housing, and the shell. The contacts come in two main types, the Female Socket and the Male Pin. The Female Socket contacts are installed in the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and the Male Pin contacts are soldered or crimped onto the wire.
The contacts are stamped and formed primarily from copper or copper alloys. Depending upon the contact’s application and device, contact materials may vary with brass, beryllium copper, phosphor bronze, and stainless steel. Each type of material has its own unique characteristics, including temperature rating, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and resistance to wear or fatigue.
The contacts are further divided by shape and structure. Crimp contacts are generally used in high-power applications, as they make the most reliable and secure connection. Insulated contacts are generally used for data applications, as they allow for multiple connections and are much easier to work with. IDC (Insulation Displacement Contact) contacts are designed for high-speed and low-resistance connections.
The contacts are designed to mate with the specific terminal they are intended for. Female Socket terminals are designed to be soldered directly into the PCB (Printed Circuit Board). Male Pin terminals are soldered or crimped onto the wire.
Every contact is assigned a type number. This number will be stamped on the contact itself, and refers to the terminal the contact is designed to be used with. Depending on the application, the type number can vary, however most contacts use one of the three series of numbers (745, 775, or 795). Standard contacts are rated up to 5A and are available in both single pole and multi-pole configurations.
Installation of the contacts involves placing them into the housing, either manually or by using an automated process. The contacts are inserted into the housing and pressed against the terminals. This creates pressure that reduces stress and ensures a good connection. The contacts are then secured with a friction lock.
The 1-745269-0 application field and working principle provides an ideal solution for applications that require robust electrical connections. The contact’s design ensures a low resistance connection and provides superior durability. The contact’s shape allows for a tight fit, which ensures a reliable connection even under vibration and extreme environmental conditions.
