RF directional couplers, or more properly radio frequency directional couplers, are specialized radio frequency (RF) devices that are used to measure or sample the power in a section of a transmission line that leads away from an attached source, such as a transmitter. RF directional couplers often look very much like attenuators and double stub tuning elements, but their operation and purpose in use are quite different. This article will discuss the 10012-20 application field and working principle of RF directional couplers.
How RF Couplers Work
RF directional couplers operate by sampling a portion of the power travelling in the attached transmission line. This is accomplished by the use of a parallel transmission line arrangement. This arrangement consists of two transmission lines, typically coaxial cable, running side-by-side in parallel, with the ends of the lines connected to the source. The lines have the same physical separation and line length, and therefore same electrical characteristics. When power is injected into one line, an equivalent amount of power is forced into the other line with current lagging voltage by 90°, and as a result, both lines have an equal amount of energy travelling in them.
In a directional coupler, a “bridging” element is inserted across the two lines, so that a portion of the power is diverted and made available to the coupler’s output port. This portion of the signal is usually 10%-20% of the power, and is referred to as the “coupling factor” or “directional coupling.” This diverted power is then made available to the user to measure or use. The most common use of an RF coupler is to measure the signal strength of a transmission line.
10012-20 Application Field and Working Principle
The 10012-20 is a 20 dB directional coupler that is widely used in the transmission and reception of signals, communications, and other RF applications. It is designed to keep the signal level within necessary limits and accurately measure the power of the incoming signal. The 10012-20 directional coupler has an operating frequency range of 1.5 to 500 GHz, and can handle input/output power of up to 10 watts.
The 10012-20 is designed to be connected in line with the transmission line to measure the power levels of the signal. The power of the signal is split into “forward” and “reverse” paths. The forward path is injected into the line and is used for measurement, while the reverse path is used to monitor the forward signal to ensure power within necessary limits. The level of power that is diverted to the reverse path can be adjusted by two separate attenuators. The 10012-20 also has a built-in detector, which allows for the measurement of positive and negative peak levels.
Another application of the 10012-20 is for testing and monitoring of transmitters and receivers. By connecting the coupler inline with the signal path, it can be used to monitor the power levels of the transmitted signal to ensure that it is staying within the necessary limits. This allows the system to be set up and maintained without interfering with the operation of the equipment.
The 10012-20 is a low-cost, compact-sized, high-performance coupler that provides accurate, reliable signal strength measurements. Its low insertion loss and its ability to handle up to 10 watts of input and output power makes it ideal for a wide range of applications. The 10012-20 is a versatile and reliable tool for measuring the power levels of RF signals, and for monitoring and testing transmitters and receivers.
