Working Principle. 10014-30 RF Directional Coupler is composed of three parts: Coupling and measuring arm, Input/Output arm and Direction Finding Arm. The energy received in the input/output arm is split into two parts, one part is directed into the measuring arm, while the other part is send back to the input arm. The part that sent back to the input arm contains the same voltage and frequency as the initial signal. The voltage and frequency of the part that flows into the measuring arm is opposite to the initial signal.

The part that flows into the measuring arm is related to the incident signal. When there is a power increment on the incident signal, then there must be a power decrement in the measuring arm, or vice versa. If the transmitted signal is consistent, the power in the measuring arm is also consistent. The input power is proportional to the incident power, which can be measured by the direction finding arm. Meanwhile, the measuring arm can record the magnitude of the incident power, and the direction finding arm can measure the direction of the incident power. Hence, the 10014-30 RF Directional Coupler is able to measure both the magnitude and the direction of the incident signal.

The direction finding arm divides the incident signal into two parts, and sends them to two opposite directions, from the center of the arm, to both sides. The two signals are bidirectional and they have the same energy and phase. After the signals pass through the opposite sides, the two signals will have different energy and phase which depends on the incident signal.
