FFCs uses a pin and socket system. A pin is made up of a single, hollow metal element that slides and locks into a socket. The pins are often made from steel and gold plated. The pins are held in place by a spring-loaded contact arm. The contact arm is made up of a metal plate which is attached to the socket and is flexible, allowing it to be moved in and out, as required. The arm contacts the pins and helps ensure that the connection is secure and will not be broken if disturbed.

These contacts are then wired to their destination – either to a board or directly to individual components.
