Thermal - Thermoelectric, Peltier Modules
The science behind thermoelectric Peltier modules and their applications is an intriguing and complex one, but in a nutshell, these amazing devices are capable of producing a great deal of products and helping to conserve energy. In essence, thermoelectric Peltier modules use a special type of current that works to create a difference in temperature between two sides of the unit. At the heart of the thermoelectric technology are Peltier cells, also known as thermo elements. These cells are constructed of a semiconductor material, usually bismuth telluride or other similar substances, sandwiched between two metallic plates. The current causes energy to be transferred from one side of the Peltier cell to the other, and this energy is utilized to produce cooling and heating.
A Peltier cell works on the principle of the Peltier-Seebeck effect. In this effect, an electric current passes through a junction, which contains two different types of semiconductor materials. As the current is applied, heat is absorbed or released depending on the direction of the current, and this heat generates a thermal voltage. The thermal power generated by this method is then utilized in various applications.
One common use of the thermoelectric Peltier modules is in cryogenics, where very “cold” temperatures are needed for experimental purposes. This technology is also used in almost all cooling applications, like computer room air conditioners, electric generators, and potato coolers. It can even be used for scientific and medical purposes, such as cooling MRI and X-ray machines or chilling food containers.
Another application of Peltier modules is in providing a method for energy recovery, by converting thermal energy into electrical energy. In power management, these modules are used in feedback control systems, which help to regulate the heating and cooling of the system. They can also be used to control the output of a device or conserve energy in a battery.
