The HMC512LP5 Evaluation and Development Board from Hittite Microwave Corporation is a low-cost evaluation board specifically designed for HMC-512LP5 family of GaAs MMIC Low-noise PAs. This evaluation board is designed for use in applications requiring 30 - 512MHz of operation, which include wireless infrastructure, cellular base station amplifiers, test equipment, broadband receivers, and defense and military electronics.The board’s features include wide frequency operation (30 - 512MHz), low-noise figure (typically 2.6dB), high linearity (IP3 typically 34 dBm), low distortion (typically -75 dBc), and higher efficiency (up to 56%) than competitive designs. This board also features a 2 watt linear output power, impedance matching, on-board pump circuit and bias controls. The board is designed to be easily used in the laboratory, enabling quick evaluation of new designs. The board can be utilized with a low cost, low power single-ended, 10 MHz PLL synthesizer, evaluation and prototyping software, and interactive graphical-user-interface software for rapid evaluation and design.Working Principle
The HMC512LP5 evaluation and development board has a unique operating principle that is based on a linear MMIC chipset design. This lithium-based chipset uses very low voltage open-loop stages, or stages that take a signal and combine it with other signals, and combine the resulting signal with other low voltage signals to produce the desired linear output signal. The linear MMIC chipset also incorporates a number of low-voltage, low-noise amplifiers, gain blocks, and a power amplifier. The power amplifier is a specifically-designed, low-noise amplifier circuit that is used to generate linear amplified output power. The linear output power is then routed to the RF output connectors on the evaluation board. The power amplifier uses a low noise MMIC amplifier to create the required high linear gain at high frequencies. The linear MMIC chipset also includes an amplitude stabilization loop, which minimizes the output power variation over the frequency range. The chipset also incorporates a bypass switch, which can be used to reduce the distortion caused by the high linearity application.The amplifier also utilizes an integrated impedance matching network to provide excellent matching at the amplifier’s output, which is useful for applications requiring high linearity. The board also provides precise gain adjustment (up to 35dB) with an on-board manual gain control. The manual gain control can be used to adjust the output power level as needed for the application.In addition to the amplifier, the HMC512LP5 Evaluation and Development Board also includes several other components that aid in the evaluation process.
