Rectangular Connectors - Headers, Receptacles, Female Sockets, is a segment of the interconnect industry used for a multitude of applications. In the market, the most popular connector styles are the time-tested so-called Color Coded PVC and the newer 147105-2 series which follows DIN 41612 Coding system. In this article, we shall discuss the applications and working principles of the classic 147105-2 connector series.

The 147105-2 rectangular connector series is designed for PCB board to board connections as well as cable to PC board applications; due to its space-saving design, it is suitable for computer systems, electronic instruments, measuring systems, communication systems and many other applications. The latching plug header and housing are optional accessories of this connector series and completely designed in accordance to DIN 41612 standards. The contact types are available in the form of crimp, solder and insulation displacement types.

The series is available in a right-angle PC board mounting, right-angle cable or PCB to cable as well as vertical cable to PCB assemblies. It is designed to be free from short circuit problems with its highly reliable AES contacts which feature an insulation support. Furthermore, the series is designed with a self-locking and a jam-nut design where an enhanced version known as the ‘snap-in’ type is also available.

The 147105-2 Board-to-Board connector series is designed with various contact configurations such as 9, 15, 21, 25, 31 and 37 positions. The design is also available in either vertical or right-angle configurations, with the latter being the most commonly used. The contact position layouts include a 1 row (G01-5/G01-3/G01-4) type, 2 row (G02-4/G02-5) type, and 3 row (G03-4/G03-5/G03-9) type. In addition, a staggered design (U01-11/U01-19) is also available.

When it comes to working principle, it involves making a physical connection between two circuits and two conductive bodies are usually used for this purpose. This type of connection is also known as a mating connection. One end of the connection is the male connector, which is usually a header or receptacle that contains metal pins, and the other end is a female connector (socket) which contains sockets that accept the pins. When the two connectors are joined, the pins from the male connector make electrical connections with the sockets of the female connector.

To ensure that the proper connections are made, first the male connector is put into the board, then the female one, and then the connections or pins are then inserted and soldered. The socket of the female connector is made of metal and has a very fine surface because these pins are so small. The solder has to make contact in between these small pins and it is very important to not use too much solder because it could cause shorting. After soldering is completed, the female connector is then plugged into the male connector which creates a physical connection.
