TVS-Mixed Technology
Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) is an important tool used in circuit protection. It is designed to protect many sensitive electronic components by safely reducing the amplitude of electrical transients that might otherwise cause significant damage. Many TVS devices are available such as the 150-709, which is one of the hybrid devices combining avalanching with clamping. This article will discuss the application fields and working principle of the 150-709.
Application Fields of 150-709
The 150-709 device provides protection against over-voltage, electrostatic discharges (ESD), and lightning transients. It is mainly used by designers of UL/EN applications, hence the corresponding safety approval in accordance to UL 1414, EN 12015 and EN 60730-2-31. The factor of this device that makes it stand out from the competition is its clamping withstand voltage of 600 V and its low leakage current of 1.00 µA maximum.
Typical applications for the 150-709 include:
- Consumer electronics such as audio, video, and digital camera equipment.
- Industrial control and communications equipment, including modems, displays, and switching equipment.
- Computers, laptops, tablets, and smart-phones.
- Automotive electronics.
Working Principle of 150-709
The 150-709 device is protected against over-voltage and electrostatic discharges (ESDs) by its avalanche voltage protection and its electrostatic discharge protection. To achieve the desired protection capability, the 150-709 requires a minimum of 600 V on its cathode, and its anode must remain at ground.
The 150-709 works by triggering an avalanche breakdown of the PN junction. When the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the device, the current through the device increases exponentially, allowing the excess voltage to be transferred to the device’s anode. This sudden rise in current creates a pulse of energy in the external circuit, which is then dissipated by the device’s internal protection circuitry.
In addition to the avalanche breakdown, the device’s electrostatic discharge protection prevents ESD from damaging the device. The 150-709 is designed to absorb the ESD and dissipate the energy as safely as possible. This reduces the risk of damage and prevents catastrophic failure of the device.
The 150-709 device is well-suited for protecting sensitive electronic components against over-voltage, ESD, and lightning transients. Its ability to trigger an avalanche breakdown and to dissipate ESD effectively makes it an ideal choice for many applications.
