Fixed inductors are electrical components that are comprised of a type of coil, or winding, wound around a core material, and are also referred to as chokes or reactors. Their main purpose is to impede or resist the flow of electricity through them. This is done by using the inductance of the inductor, which is measured in Henrys (H). The inductance of an inductor is determined by the quantity of windings, the type of core material used, and also the inductors diameter. The more windings, the larger the core, and the larger the diameter, the higher the inductance.

The most common type of fixed inductors used are the pancake body, cylindrical body, and the surface mount type. Pancake body inductors are usually wound on a ferrite core, which has a larger inductance than a cylindrical body inductor. The larger the body of the inductor, the higher the inductance.

Cylindrical body inductors are typically wound on a ceramic core, as the core material is much more efficient than ferrite. Ceramic cores have a higher inductance than ferrite cores, but they are more expensive. The surface mount type of fixed inductors are very small and are typically wound on ferrite cores. They are designed for higher density applications, as the size of the inductors is drastically reduced.

Besides the core material and the number of windings, other factors that affect an inductors performance are its temperature, frequency, and voltage. As temperature increases, the inductance decreases, as does the frequency. Conversely, as voltage increases, the inductance increases, as does the frequency. Additionally, the inductance of an inductor can be improved with adjusting the number of windings, and the type of core material used.

Fixed inductors are used in a variety of applications, such as noise suppression, surge suppression, voltageregulation, current regulation, and power conditioning. For noise suppression, inductors are used to reduce high frequency electrical noise. Surge suppression inductors reduce surges in the electrical system. Voltage regulation is the process of controlling the voltage output of an electrical system, and is often used to protect sensitive equipment from power fluctuations. Current regulation is used to maintain the current of an electrical system. And finally, power conditioning is often used in an electrical system to improve the power factor, which is the ratio of active power to apparent power in an AC circuit.

Fixed inductors are an essential component for many electrical systems, and have been used for many years in a variety of applications. With the advances in technology, newer inductor types are being developed to meet the needs of current applications, such as smaller sizes, higher inductances, and better reliability.
