Fixed Inductors: 160-154GS Application Field and Working Principle
The 160-154GS series is a fixed inductor series manufactured by Coilcraft and is particularly designed for chip-scale current sensing applications. The series’ inductors are equipped with features that allow for improved electrical efficiency and greater operational stability. They are also designed to reduce electrical noise, and provide protection from static electricity during assembly and use.
The 160-154GS series are SMD (surface mount device) ac-coupled tolerance inductors that operate in an ac-coupled environment. The inductors are designed with printed-circuit board (PCB) mounted on a ceramic substrate. The inductor is then mounted on a side of the PCB, and an external wire is wrapped around the core of the inductor to form a ferrite-core inductor. The internal components of the inductor are embedded in a rigid epoxy composite material.
The 160-154GS series of inductors offer a wide range of electrical characteristics such as: low stray capacitance; high current rating; low temperature coefficient; low AC impedance; and flexible construction.
In addition, the 160-154GS series of inductors are designed with an internal compensation system that reduces effects of self-heating, reducing risk of burn-out and allowing for higher power and current ratings. The 160-154GS series are also designed with an internal ferrite-ring system that helps reduce EMI interference.
The ideal working principle of the 160-154GS series inductors involves creating an electromagnetic field in a conductor or loop. This field exerts an attractive force on the electrons within the circuit, moving them in the direction of the magnetic field. As the electrons flow through the loop, a voltage is induced within the circuit. This voltage in turn is amplified and then applied to the switch, causing it to change its position.
The basic operation of 160-154GS series inductors can be broken down into several steps:
- A current is applied to the terminals of the inductor.
- This current generates a magnetic field in the core of the inductor.
- The resulting electromagnetic field induces a voltage in the windings of the inductor.
- The induced voltage then amplifies, creating an output voltage.
- The output voltage is then applied to the switch, causing it to change its position.
The 160-154GS series of fixed inductors from Coilcraft offer a range of performance benefits when compared to traditional inductors. They are an ideal choice for a wide range of chip-scale current sensing (CSCS) applications due to their higher current rating, low-temperature coefficient, low AC impedance, and flexible construction.
The 160-154GS series of fixed inductors are a great choice for applications where high current and low inductance values are needed. The series are ideal for pulse and frequency modulation circuits, surge protection circuits, and low-power current sensing applications. Additionally, these inductors provide protection from EMI interference, and provide superior long-term reliability when compared to traditional inductors.
